SUMMARY:Twilight Tours with the Mourning Society of St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Halloween Twilight Tours with the Mourning Society of St. Louis! \nExperience the magnificent period rooms of the Campbell House dimmed to gaslight brightness and draped for mourning. Guests get the unique opportunity see the Campbell House at night and learn about Victorian mourning customs. Mourning Society members will even be in appropriate mourning dress. Witness Robert Campbell’s 1879 wake and funeral in the parlor; hear about the process of preparing the deceased for burial; see Victorian mourning dress and etiquette and learn about the 19th Century cemeteries of St. Louis. \nTour start times are 6:00\, 6:15\, 6:30\, 6:45\, 7:00\, 7:15\, 7:30\, 7:45.  Each tour group is limited to 14 people.\n \nTickets are $20 and $10 for Campbell House members.  All sales are final. \nMembers please call 314-421-0325 for the discounted price. \nRecreation of Robert Campbell’s October 19\, 1879 wake and funeral in the Campbell House parlor.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Campbell House Museum on Sunday\, December 10 to hear a lecture about the old Famous Barr Department store. Edna Gravenhorst will be lecturing about the history of the department store as well as promoting her book on the subject. \nMay Company purchased the Famous Clothing Company in 1892 and acquired the William Barr Dry Goods Company nineteen years later. In 1914\, Famous-Barr opened the doors of its iconic downtown location\, treating folks across Missouri and Illinois to almost a century of spectacular window displays and noteworthy luncheons. \nThe event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join the two jew­els of his­toric preser­va­tion in St. Louis for a spe­cial hol­i­day open house\, fea­tur­ing the Camp­bell House Museum and Magic Chef Man­sion. On this hol­i­day evening\, guests will have the oppor­tu­nity to see both homes in all their Christ­mas splendor. \nThe Camp­bell House Museum was built in 1851 and has been com­pletely restored to the high-Victorian opu­lence of the 1880s. The home or renowned fur trader and entre­pre­neur Robert Camp­bell and his fam­ily\, the Museum con­tains hun­dreds of orig­i­nal fam­ily pos­ses­sions includ­ing fur­ni­ture\, paint­ings\, cloth­ing\, let­ters and carriages. Campbell House is located at 1508 Locust Street in downtown St. Louis. \nThe Magic Chef Man­sion was built in 1908 for Charles Stock­strom who was the founder of the Quick Meal and Magic Chef Stove Com­pany. Designed by archi­tect Ernst Janssen\, the 12\,000 square foot home cost $49\,600 and took only one year to build. This restored man­sion\, today a pri­vate res­i­dence\, sits on two acres and also fea­tures the orig­i­nal car­riage house. SUMMARY:Opening Exhibit Reception: Famous Barr and Christmas in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:Join the Campbell House Museum in the month of December for a special mini exhibit honoring the memory of Samuel B. Clark (1927-2014)\, who for years designed the window displays for Christmas at the Famous Barr department stores. He was known to have said\, “you can’t overdo Christmas” and in his retirement he designed the Christmas decorations for the Campbell House Museum. \nThe exhibit will open on Thursday\, November 30 at 5 p.m. and will feature exhibits not only Famous Barr memorabilia\, but also Christmas related items that could be viewed at the stores. The exhibit will be up until Mid-January. \nSome light refreshments will be served along with Virginia Campbell’s Roman Punch. Tickets to attend are $40 per person. DESCRIPTION:The Tying the Knot exhibit features 20 wedding gowns\, dresses and ensembles that date from the 1870s all the way up to 2020. The exhibit emphasizes the tradition of the bride wearing white\, which was popularized by Queen Victoria at her marriage in February of 1840. and continues to this day. Come explore this unique exhibit and the past 150 years of wedding gown fashion! This exhibit will be on display until April 2024. $10 entry fee includes Museum guided tour.

The Library is pleased to partner with the Campbell House to incorporate the story of St. Louis’ prominent Campbell family\, who embarked on their own Grand Tour in 1867.
