DESCRIPTION:Romance\, Immigrants and Bob Hope at Jefferson Barracks \n\n\n\n\n\nBased on NiNi Harris’s new book\, Jefferson Barracks\, defending the nation since 1826 \nIn 1826\, the high ground south of St. Louis that overlooked the Mississippi was chosen for a frontier outpost of the U.S. Army named Jefferson Barracks. It became the site of the Army’s first Basic Training program\, the first U.S. Cavalry\, and the first parachute drop. \nIt was also a place where immigrants served their new country\, where newly-wed officers were posted and where West Point graduates met and married St. Louis girls. During World War II\, Jefferson Barracks was one of the places where Bob Hope made young scared recruits and draftees – destined for the battlefields in Europe and in the Pacific — burst into laughter and applause. \n\n\n\nAcclaimed St. Louis historian NiNi Harris talks about the history of Jefferson Barracks on Sunday\, October 4th at 2 p.m. No reservation needed and parking is free on Sundays!

SUMMARY:A Nightingale Sang: A Historical Program of Victorian Superstar Jenny Lind
DESCRIPTION:In 1851\, the Campbell House was newly built\, the city of St. Louis was flourishing\, and audiences across America were captivated by the voice of opera superstar Jenny Lind\, the “Swedish Nightingale.” 1851 also marked the end of Lind’s North American tour in St. Louis\, a historic event attended by the Campbells. One hundred seventy-five years later\, we invite you to return to that remarkable moment in time. \nJoin acclaimed soprano Angel Azarra for A Nightingale Sang\, an intimate concert performed in the historic parlor of the Campbell House. Surrounded by the elegance of a bygone era\, guests will hear selections from Jenny Lind’s famed 1851 tour alongside music connected to the Campbell family and their world. The program will be performed on the Campbells’ own 1855 square grand piano\, inviting you to imagine an evening much like one the Campbell family enjoyed. \nWith only 36 guests at each performance\, this rare musical gathering offers the chance to step beyond the museum ropes and into the rhythm of nineteenth-century life. Performances will be held Saturday\, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday\, September 13 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $100 and availability is limited. \n  \n \nListed by Operavore among the “40 Under 40: A New Generation of Superb Opera Singers”\, dramatic soprano Angel Azzarra is known for her “warm voice that swells from staggering size to pianissimi as effortlessly as the ocean waves” (Sybaritic Singer\,). Ms. Azzarra performed excerpts from the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos at Opera Theatre of St. Louis\,  where she was praised for “simply astonishing power and pure beauty” (Broadway World\,).  Further operatic commitments have included her triumphant ride as Gerhilde in Detroit Opera’s The Valkyries under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis\, Opera Festival of Chicago‘s inaugural seasons of Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Verdi’s Il Corsaro\, dell’Arte Opera Ensemble’s Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni\, continuing that role with Gulfshore Opera and St. Petersburg Opera\, and her Mimì in Mobile Opera‘s La Bohème. Recent performances have included Turandot\, Foreign Princess with Opera Ithaca’s Rusalka\,  and her Kennedy Center debut described by The Washington Post as “…visually vibrant and vocally dazzling” as Melpomene in Les Fêtes de Thalie with Opera Lafayette. Other works beyond the physical stage include a filmed production as Berta in The Barber of Seville with Opera Theatre Saint Louis and the lead in an original piece\, Once Upon a Winter\, which premiered on PBS in 2021. The home or renowned fur trader and entrepreneur Robert Campbell and his family\, the Museum contains hundreds of original family possessions including furniture\, paintings\, clothing\, letters and carriages. \nChatillon-DeMenil House: 3352 DeMenil Place\, St. Louis\, MO 63118\nThe Chatillon DeMenil Mansion was built as a farmhouse for Henri Chatillon\, a guide on the Oregon Trail. In 1856\, the house was sold to Nicholas N. DeMenil\, a pharmacist\, who had the house expanded into the Greek Revival style by architect Henry Pitcher in 1863. \nField House Museum: 634 S. Broadway\, St. Louis\, MO 63102\nThe Field House Museum was originally built in a row of 12 houses known as Walsh’s Row\, and it was inhabited by Roswell Field\, a lawyer for Dred Scott\, in 1850. Before becoming an award-winning writer\, cookbook author\, food historian/ foodways interpreter\, she began her culinary career as a caterer and culinary instructor teaching international cuisines\, baking\, classic gourmet\, and American cuisines with an emphasis on historic recipes and cooking techniques.  Focusing on research\, interpretation and writing\, Suzanne has established\, created\, and presented foodways programs at local\, regional\, and national historic sites. \n\nAbout the book \nA delectable read\, The Gilded Table is a collection of historic recipes spiced with Victorian dining traditions and fascinating family history.  The 224-page\, hard-cover publication spotlights the food\, culinary traditions and social decorum of 19th century America through the private home and social life of Robert and Virginia Campbell\, who were at the time\, one of St. Louis’ and Missouri’s wealthiest couples. Their luxurious parlor and dining table welcomed the likes of President and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant; William Tecumseh Sherman; and engineer James B. Eads.

You will also have the chance to enter your name in a raffle to win a sip out of President Ulysses Grant’s Mint Julep Cup. \nFor those seeking a deeper dive into history\, the Twilight Tour offers a chilling exploration of Victorian mourning traditions\, burial customs\, and spiritual beliefs surrounding death\, all within the home decorated for mourning.
