SUMMARY:Annual Lecture: The St. Louis Slave Trade in the Era of Robert Campbell
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Annual Lecture will be presented by Dr. Kenneth Winn\, Historian and Former Archivist of the State of Missouri. \nDuring the 1850s St. Louis’s preeminent slave trader Bernard Lynch handled the trade for St. Louis’s elite. While Lynch sold slaves locally\, he sold more “down the river” to places like Natchez and New Orleans. Most wealthy St. Louisans became involved with slavery in one manner or another\, including. Robert Campbell. This talk unveils previously unknown information about Bernard Lynch’s pernicious trade\, and puts Robert Campbell’s slaveholding into the context of its time. \nSt. Louis Public Library\, Central Auditorium \n1301 Olive Street (please use the Locust St. entrance)\nSaint Louis\, MO 63103 \nAll metered parking is free on Sundays. \nTHANK YOU TO THE ST. LOUIS PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR BEING THE VENUE SPONSOR FOR THIS LECTURE.

SUMMARY:The Cholera Years: How St. Louis Solved its First Environmental Crisis
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  This venue for the 2016 Campbell House lecture has been changed to the AUDITORIUM of CENTRAL LIBRARY. Please use the Locust Street entrance. The date and time of the lecture remain the same.  Because of the venue change\, reservations are no longer required.   \nJoin the Campbell House for our annual lecture in the spring. This year’s lecture is presented by Dr. Andrew Hurley\, Professor of History at the University of Missouri-St. Louis\, and focuses on the impact cholera had on St. Louis. For much of the 19th century\, St. Louis was held in the grip of fear by the deadly scourge of cholera (the Campbell’s first-born son James died in the 1849 epidemic). Although advances in medical knowledge and sanitation eventually eradicated the disease\, environmental reforms designed to improve public health raised an entirely new set of challenges that we still grapple with today. \nPlease call 314-421-0325 for more information.
