LECTURE: A History of Jefferson Barracks presented by NiNi Harris

Romance, Immigrants and Bob Hope at Jefferson Barracks
Based on NiNi Harris’s new book, Jefferson Barracks, defending the nation since 1826
In 1826, the high ground south of St. Louis that overlooked the Mississippi was chosen for a frontier outpost of the U.S. Army named Jefferson Barracks. It became the site of the Army’s first Basic Training program, the first U.S. Cavalry, and the first parachute drop.
It was also a place where immigrants served their new country, where newly-wed officers were posted and where West Point graduates met and married St. Louis girls. During World War II, Jefferson Barracks was one of the places where Bob Hope made young scared recruits and draftees – destined for the battlefields in Europe and in the Pacific — burst into laughter and applause.
Acclaimed St. Louis Historian NiNi Harris talks about the history of Jefferson Barracks leading up to the release of her new book. Lecture is on Sunday, October 4th at 2 p.m. No reservation needed and parking is free on Sundays!
