Twilight Tours with the Mourning Society and Spirits in the Garden

Before the veil between worlds grows thin this Hallows’ Eve, step across the threshold of the Campbell House Museum and into a world where mourning, memory, and mystery intertwine.
We invite you to experience a rare recreation of Robert Campbell’s 1879 wake in one of our annual Twilight Tours. Wander through the darkened, candlelit halls of the historic home as members of the St. Louis Mourning Society illuminate the customs and beliefs that shaped Victorian attitudes toward death. Discover mourning traditions, burial practices, spiritual beliefs, and the folklore of Hallows’ Eve, including the beloved Victorian celebration of Snap Apple Night in the carriage house.
As evening deepens, venture outdoors for Spirits in the Garden, a gathering inspired by the season’s fascination with the unseen. Enjoy a curated tasting of wines and whiskeys, along with a signature cocktail crafted especially for the occasion. Savor traditional Hallows’ Eve treats, including pretzels and mourning cookies, while surrounded by the autumn atmosphere of the Campbell House grounds. Guests may also choose to purchase a personal reading from a spiritual reader and glimpse what messages may await beyond the veil.
Whether you choose to join us for the candlelit Twilight Tours, the spirited festivities in the garden, or both experiences together, this enchanting evening offers a rare opportunity to explore the customs, superstitions, and celebrations that defined a Victorian Hallows’ Eve.
